Embracing Winter's Call: A Samhain Reflection from Glastonbury

After walking the sacred grounds of Glastonbury, I find myself in a cosy cafe warming myself with spicy squash soup and perhaps a few too many purchases from the magical stores. I’ve spent the past few days reflecting on the recent celebration of Samhain, marking the end of autumn and the onset of winter. This ancient festival reminds us of our ancestors' resilience as they braced for the harsh, cold months with limited resources. Today, despite modern comforts, many still experience discomfort as winter invites us to explore our inner worlds.

Winter impacts our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual states. The colder months can bring physical challenges, isolation, and low moods. Yet, with conscious awareness, we can uncover winter's blessings, nurturing our well-being and personal growth.

Just as seeds require darkness to germinate, winter urges us to turn inward. It's an opportunity for reflection and connection with our unconscious, allowing intuition to flourish. By embracing this inner journey, we learn to let go of what no longer serves us, making way for new beginnings.

Winter invites us to prepare for hibernation, as do the animals and trees, so we can listen to and nourish our souls. As the Solstice approaches, consider how the regenerative power of darkness can rejuvenate and align you with your life's purpose. Use this potent time to plant your intentions, hopes, and dreams in the fertile soil of winter's depths, ready to emerge renewed and strengthened.

ReNurture Top Tips on Embracing Winter:

Winter's quietness naturally invites introspection. Use this time to:

Get cosy

There’s nothing quite like a candlelit evening, creating a soft glow for a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for contemplation.

Meditate

Meditation can help centre your thoughts and connect you with your inner self. There's many free resources available to help support you. I love Insight Timer or come along to one of my Sound Journey Meditations

Take Mindful Walks

Dress warmly and take a walk in nature. Even though it's cold, nature has a unique beauty in winter that can be uplifting. Pay attention to the sounds, smells, and sights around you. Notice how the earth rests and regenerates during this season. Observing these changes can foster a sense of connection to the cycle of life.

Journalling

Write about your thoughts, feelings, and goals. Reflecting on your experiences and emotions can offer clarity and inspire personal growth.

Practice Gratitude

Write down three things you are grateful for each day. This practice can shift your focus from what's lacking to the abundance in your life. Show appreciation to those around you. A simple thank you or a small gesture can spread warmth and positivity.

Night Sky Gazing

On clear nights, look up at the stars. Contemplating the vastness of the universe can bring a sense of wonder and humility.

Move your body

Find a way you enjoy moving, be it lifting weights, dancing, walking, or yoga to help maintain physical and spiritual balance during the cold months.

Community Gatherings

Seek out local groups that allow you to share experiences with others such as Womens Circles, choirs, art classes, walking clubs, sports… the list is endless.

Warm Nourishing Foods

Enjoy soups, stews, and teas that warm the body and soul.

Herbal Remedies

Use herbs like chamomile and lavender in teas or baths to soothe and relax.

Get creative

Take this time to get in touch with your creative side. How do you like to express yourself? Don't know? What did you like to do as a child -  perhaps moulding with clay, painting, singing, dancing, climbing trees? Find your way to play today.

Do the inner work - a time for transformation

Now could be a good time to study, do therapy, take on a hobby or set intentions for what you want to manifest in the coming year. Create a vision board that represents your goals and dreams.
